The 90's was a time of change for me. Both my parents passed away and I became a single parent. When I was younger, even if life was difficult, I had this feeling that things would work out in the years ahead. This optimism, sometimes taken for granted, was mainly due to the impression that there were many years in front of me. There was always time for life to fall into place. As I reached the middle of my life this idealism was challenged by the reality that the future is not infinite. For me the ladder is a symbol of hope, maybe because you can use it to reach higher or climb up out of a hole. The Ladder series is an attempt to express this hope, this idealism that we take for granted in our youth and need to fight to maintain later in life. Although challenged, my optimism was not defeated and I am thankful.
